The 2Tb accelsior is the fastest of course. I Checked it and it doesn’t slow the raid at all the fact that is connecter externally. Three of them are internal and 1 is connected to the Sonnet USB3 card. I also have a usb 4tb connected to the sonnet doing time machine all the time. My mac was shutting down when doing heavy 3D renders with the GPU.Ĭheck the MacProUpgrade on facebook I learned a lot there.įor the drives I use a 2TB really fast PCI for raw editing, then a 4TB fast enough for editing almost as good as the PCI, and a ssd 500 for AE graphics and small projects.

the second PSU is sit on top of the case, you will need extra power for the GPU if you go with titanx or 1080ti. You'll still have 2 Drive bays (counting optical) for system and more juice for NVIDIA card The Sonnet Allegro is a must (and amazing product), so you're out of PCI slots for anything else.īut with the right setup, you can connect a very fast internal raid0 (4 SSD) to the raid card for caching and renders (almost sure that faster than what the Accelsior gives) I seen 2009s work with 1080 Ti (Macvidcards) without it and performance difference from Titan is marginal.Īlso, I'd look into a raid card with mini SAS connections for large fast external storage (USB3 isn't enough) instead of a PCI ssd (like the Accelsior) I don't think you have to use an external PSU for new cards. Is USB3 across that Sonnet card fast enough to store media on for use in editing? Mariano - are you using that '2d PSU XFX XTR 750W 80+ Gold (nvidia 6pin and 8pin)' power supply externally just to power the Nvidia card, or have you replaced the internal power supply? Does it just sit on top of the case?Īnd then you seem to have a hell of a lot of small hard SSD drives - RAID across internal and external drives? Could you please share how you have configured your drives? I will not sell this 2010 computer any soon.īut all the upgrades I bought is stuff that I could rehuse in another PC when I switch in the future, since Apple in my opinion is not longer the way to go. I edit Raw 4k files without a problem, render complex 3D scenes in C4D, and do a lot in AE. Performance is really really good if you invest money on it.

Options seem to be (a) get the graphics card, potentially upgrade to a 12-core processor and internal SSD RAID (b) sell the silver box and built a Hackintosh (c) other? They seem to think the 1080Ti works fine in the 5,1 although many others seem to argue it can't be powered properly - a 1070/80 is a cheaper alternative that will still be much better than I have. ers-guide/ and an iMac Pro is out of my budget for now anyway. We have recently bought an UMP, and my need is mostly 2K grading, with a bit of 4K finishing but I'm not expecting bleeding edge performance and dozens of nodes.Ĭreate.pro still argue strongly for the old Mac Pros vs even iMac Pro.

I have just bought a Decklink Mini Monitor 4K card and am considering a 1080Ti/1080 for resolve as the cheapest option to get another year or so use out of the machine. It still performs admirably with FCPX (even in 4K) but is almost useless in Resolve grading due to the original graphics card. Our old 2010 Mac Pro 5,1 2.8/quad is modestly updated with SSD, 16GB RAM and internal RAID.
